Preface
DividedKingdomisthesecondpartofastudyoftheearlymodernoriginsofIrish
society. As with the first volume, Contested Island, its main concern is with the
changing relationships and patterns of interaction among the different sections
of an ethnically, and by this time religiously, divided society, continuing the
storyfromIreland’spartintheBritishcivilwarsofthemid-seventeenthcentury
totheeraoftheAmericanandFrenchrevolutions.
The chronologyof thissecond volume brings me to the period in which my
ownresearchhasbeenconcentrated.Butabroadlybasedsurveyofthiskindhas
nevertheless made it necessary to rely in many respects on the work of other
historians.Asintheearliervolume,Ihavetriedtoavoidencumberingthemain
text with details of historiographical debates. However the footnotes should
indicatewhereIamfollowingtheargumentsofothers,whereIamtakingsides
onpointsofcontroversy,andwhereIamofferinganopinionofmyown.
Themainpartofthetextwascompleted,alongwiththewholeofthepreceding
volume,duringaperiodofresearchleavesupported byQueen’sUniversityand
by the Arts and Humanities Research Board. For advice on a variety of points
IamgratefultoDrLiamChambers,DrNealGarnham,MrGordonRees,and
MrJamesWilson.Ihavelearnedmuchfromarangeofconversations,shortand
