INTRODUCTION

Islamic finance are becoming increasingly popular around the world. Although,
Islamic or shariah finance is a relatively new concept to be introduced to the
financial world periodically, it is one of the fastest growing segments of global
financial services.

In order to fulfill the Islamic finance needs from the Islamic perspective,
Department of Polytechnic Education (DEP) has worked collaboratively with the
nation’s key industry players in developing the curriculum for this programme. The
collaboration aims to equip students with up-to-date knowledge and relevant skills
to meet the global challenges and the requirements set by the Islamic banking
industries. This is true especially in the Islamic financial world where there is a rapid
demand for Islamic practice in finance industry. In fact, almost all the financial
sectors integrate Islamic practice as a part of their system. One of the most
important factors in gearing towards the growth of productivity is the needs for
qualified manpower in this area so that the industry will develop significantly and
remain competitive in the global market.

To address this issue, the Curriculum Development and Evaluation Division (CDED)
has cooperated with the local industries to develop the curriculum and thus
introduces Diploma in Islamic Banking and Finance programme. This programme gives
the students a lot of opportunities to acquire the needed knowledge as well as to
undergo industrial training during their fourth semester in order to be exposed to
the real working world particularly in banking sector. This will give the students the
