Township, Stark County, Ohio. He married ELIZAABETH (NEE?) COCHRAN October 12, 1777 in Westmoreland
County, Pennsylvania. She was born February 10, 1758 in Northwest Coast, Ireland, and died December 27,
1844 in Tuscawaras Township, Stark County, Ohio.

Notes:Adam Poe lived at various times in Frederick County, Maryland; Washington County, Pennsylvania;
Columbia, Wayne and Medina Counties in Ohio
He was a shoemaker, a member of the General Reformed Church and a veteran of the Revolution.
Elizabeth Cochran's first husband was William Cochran, her maiden name is not known but thought to be
either Smith or Matthews.
All indications are that the "Barney" Poe who is the sixth child of Adam Poe and Elizabeth Cochran is our
Barnabas Madison Poe. But nothing has been confirmed other than other researchers identified and noted his
birth to Adam and Elizabeth Poe without knowing where he went or what happened to him. This is the only
"Barney Poe" known to have existed during the time frame indicated. Other Poe researchers concur with this
conclusion.

County, Missouri, daughter of SANFORD BACKUES and MARY IRELAND. She was born April 19, 1812 in Harrison
County, Virginia (now West Virginia), and died January 28, 1882 in Maries County, Missouri.

When Madison Poe died, Eliza Backues Poe married James McQueen and records ca1850 and afterward for
her and her children must be found under that name.
Barnabas Madison Poe was appointed as an Osage County Road Commissioner by the Osage County Court
on August 17, 1841. He was one of first Road Commissioners appointed for the new county. (Hallie Mantle,
History of Osage County)
Barnabas Madison Poe purchased public land located in the north west quarter of the north west quarter of
section twenty-four, in township forty one, of range eight west, in the district of lands subject to sale at St. Louis,
Missouri, containing forty acres. The land patent, #12336 was signed by John Tyler, President of the United
States on April 10, 1843.

"One hundred and fifty years ago the Poe family lived in Virginia; one lived in Chesterfield County, just
south of Richmond, which was likely their original settling place. Others of the family lived farther west across
the mountains in Amherst County. They had evidently lived in these locations for some time, for one in
particular, Andy Poe, had a reputation as an Indian fighter far past the ordinary in a time and place where every
frontiersman had to be skilled in Indian warfare if he lived. It is related of Andy that he was once separated only
a short distance from the rest of his party when attacked by two Indians who so completely surprised him that he
had no chance to use his gun. Kicking one of his opponents in the stomach, he grabbed the other by the throat. In
the ensuing fight they rolled off the bank into the creek where Andy held his adversary's head under water and
choked him till he died. The rest of the party came up and dispatched the kicked Indian during the fight. When
Andy's battle was over, in keeping with the somewhat grim humor of the times, they held a mock inquest over the
dead Indian to determine whether Andy was entitled to the credit for killing him, or whether the Indian merely
drowned."
NOTE: (This yarn is extremely well known to almost all Poe genealogy researchers and is likely, with some
emblishment, to be true. It probably occurred in Ohio and has been the subject of a painting. WLS)
"Members of the POE family were in Osage County shortly after 1820, and on January 27, 1830, Barnabas
Madison POE and Eliza BACKUES were married in that county by County Judge Henry BARCLAY. His birth
date is not known, but she was born in Virginia April 9, 1812. The names of Madison POE's parents are not
known, and we know of only one brother, John, who moved to south Missouri many years ago. It is likely that
John and Madison POE were the only members of the family to come here."
NOTE: (Osage County did not exist until 1841. The marriage of Madison Poe and Eliza Backues is
recorded in Gasconade County, Missouri Marriage Book "A", page 26. WLS) The parental information and birth
dates above came from Adam Poe Family Group Sheet provided by Lawrence D. Webb, a descendant of David
Williamson Poe, Adam's youngest son. Ludice Poe married Jack Hobaugh in Gasconade County, Missouri in
1831. She is the daughter of Isaac Poe of American Bottoms, Illinois (today East St. Louis) and a niece of
Barnabas Madison Poe. The John Poe that King mentions who was a brother of Barnabas Madison Poe married
in Columbiana County, Ohio, but could have moved to Missouri and married again. He is reported to have
subsequently moved to Cape Girardeau County, Missouri.

Barnabas Madison Poe Jr. was deaf and mute. In the 1860 Federal Census, Callaway County, Missouri, he is
in an institution in Fulton. He subsequently learned the blacksmith trade, earned his living, and lived in Belle,
Missouri but never married.

The following was derived from microfilm records of the Office of the Adjutant General, State of Missouri:
Enlisted Pvt. Co. E, Steen's Reg't (10th) Missouri Infantry, CSA, Thomasville, MO August 8, 1862 by Col.
Johnson for a period of three years. Died of wounds received at the battle of Prairie Grove, December 7,
1862. Everett King in his "History of Maries County" says that Isaac was killed in 1864 and Bryce I in his
writing says he was killed at Pea Ridge, Arkansas and "probably" buried at Wilson's Creek. This is the family
tradition that was passed on to me by my mother; however the military records do not support that tradition.
Prairie Grove, Arkansas was the site of a battle in late fall 1862 between the Union and the Confederacy.
Copies of Isaac Poe's muster roll cards secured from the Office of the Adjutant General of Missouri are on
file.

Mrs. Mary Ann Anderson died Tuesday shortly after noon. Her age was about 79 years. Mrs. Anderson was
the mother of Mat Anderson, 3½ miles north of town. The remains were laid to rest yesterday in the Buck Elk
cemetery.

"The POE home was just inside of present Maries County, northeast of Summerfield, and Madison POE died
there about 1847. Of the eleven children born to them, Eliza, John, Zephaniah, Ezra and Sanford must have died
in infancy, or at least single, since no record of any descendant of any of them has been found. The six who left
descendants were:
Mary Ann POE, the oldest child, born January 21, 1831, married a Johnson and has been dead many years.
Her three children were: Barney, Jennie, and Lyda. The latter married a man named LANCE, and is also dead
survived by two children, Andrew and Alta."

WM. P. POE DIES AT NEARLY 93 YEARS
LIFE LONG RESIDENT OF BELLE EXCEPT FOR TIME SPENT IN SERVICE OF HIS COUNTRY -
BURIED SUNDAY.

William P. Poe, nearly 93 years of age, a life long resident of Belle and a veteran of the Civil War, died at his
home here Friday afternoon, May 3, 1935. His last illness had been long, due to complications of diseases.
William Pike Poe, son of Barnabas Madison Poe and Eliza Backues Poe was born near Richfountain, Osage
County, Mo., June 22, 1842, being the eighth of ten children born to this union.
On March 8, 1865 he was married to Mary Adeline Richie. To this union was born seven children who are
still living, with exception of Columbus who died in infancy. Those living are Robert I., Andrew, and Mrs. Anice
Bowan (Bauman), all of Belle, Mrs. Parrie Pierce of Pueblo, Colo., Mrs. Laura Chambers of Sedalia, and William
A. of Little Rock, Ark. He also leaves ten grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a host of friends.
His whole life, with the exception of time spent as a soldier in the service of his country, was lived in this
community.
During the early years of their marriage, he and his wife confessed Christ, were baptized, and became
members of the first church at the place known as "The Old Frame".
He died at his home in Belle May 3, 1935 at the age of 92 years, 10 months and 11 days, his wife have
preceded him September 23, 1925.
One of the rewards of his long and blameless life was the devoted care he received from his children, his
daughter Laura and his son Andrew and wife Sophia caring for him in succession in his own home for some
previous to the last 9 years during which time this service was done by his son Robert and wife Eliza.
To know "Uncle Will", as he was affectionately known to scores of friends and relatives, was to love and
respect him.
Funeral services conducted Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the home by Rev. H.J. Maples and Rev. Waddell, large
crowd attended. Interment at Liberty cemetery.
Among those from out-of-town who attended the funeral services were W.A. Poe, Little Rock, Ark.; Mrs.
Laura Chambers and family, Mrs. George Chambers and family, Mrs. Irvin, Charles Callan, Dortha Rothganger,
all of Sedalia; D. T. James and wife, Alonzo James and wife, all of Vienna; Horace Keeney and family, Lee
Keeney and family, Burney Keeney and wife, Mrs. Emil Picker, George Keeney and wife, and Mrs. Dave
Goodman, all of Summerfield; Steele Poe and family of Mt. Sterling, Bryce Poe and family of Kansas City;
Robert Grossenheider and wife, August Bentlage, Eugene Kraeno and wife all of Bland; and Christ Bentlage and
family of Owensville.

MRS. W. A. POE
Mary A. Richie was born near Owensville, Gasconade County, Aug. 16, 1846. She was married to William
A. Poe, March 8, 1865. To this union were born 7 children of whom 6 are living as follows: Robert I. of Belle,
Mrs. Rhich Pierce, of Pueblo, Colo., Andrew of Belle, Mrs. W.F. Chambers of Sedalia. Mrs. Lex Clark, Lanes
Prairie and W.A. Poe of Bransch, Arkansas, also 10 grandchildren. She united with the Church of Christ at
Liberty in 1876. Later she placed her membership in the Belle church and continued in this fellowship until her
death at her home in Belle, Sept. 23, 1926, at the age of 80 years, 1 month and 7 days. Mrs. Poe adorned her
Christian profession with a beautiful and worth life, she eat and drank daily of the "bread and water of life". She
was a true disciple of Christ and having heeded our Master's council "seek first the Kingdom of God and his
righteousness." She reached the end of life's journey strong in faith and in great assurance of life eternal. Funeral
services were held by W.H. Scott of Eldon, --??-- at Liberty Church. The body sleeps in the silent city to await
the call of Him who is "The resurrection and the life."
This Obit is incorrect as it should read "She was married to William. P. Poe, William A. of Little Rock is their
son. The newspaper article transcribed had been changed with an ink pen.
