Advances in Science, Technology & Innovation (ASTI) is a series of peer-reviewed books
based on important emerging research that redefines the current disciplinary boundaries in
science, technology and innovation (STI) in order to develop integrated concepts for
sustainable development. It not only discusses the progress made towards securing more
resources, allocating smarter solutions, and rebalancing the relationship between nature and
people, but also provides in-depth insights from comprehensive research that addresses the
17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) as set out by the UN for 2030.
The series draws on the best research papers from various IEREK and other international
conferences to promote the creation and development of viable solutions for a sustainable

Tourismiswidelyrecognizedasoneofthemostprogressiveindustriesthathelpsguideglobal
sustainable development. The inter-relationships between tourism, culture, and heritage have
beenthecenterofdiscussionamongscholarsandresearchersatbothnationalandinternational
levels. Culture, environment, and heritage are regarded as one of the most important factors
that successfully attract tourists to destinations. Further, tourism is an excellent way to
encourage andprovideaccess tocultural heritage,but italso bringswithit challenges related
to overcrowding, cultural appropriation, and the loss of authenticity. Tourism brings money
andjobstocitiesandregions,butitcanalsodamageresidents’day-to-daylives,aswellasthe
areas of culture and heritage. With that in mind, sustainable cultural tourism is a vital part of
every regional and macro-regional development strategies. Culture is seen as platform for
social and economic development as well as competitiveness, through Inclusion and recog-
nition of cultural identities, further leading to more resilient culture and society.
Withaprimaryfocusoncultureinsustainabledevelopment,thebookclarifiesconnections
between culture as a core dimension of local sustainability and cultural dimensions of sus-
tainable tourism, further contributing to complex discussion between culture and tourism.
Topics covered in this book give an overview on current research and subjects of discussion
that focus on cultural sustainable tourism through several sections. First part of the book is
focused on planning and management of sustainable tourism, contributing to the research on
management of all resources in such a way that economic, social, and aesthetic needs can be
fulfilledwhilemaintainingculturalintegrity.Interestingpaperscanbefounddiscussingtopics
such as place attachment, peace tourism, public space development, post-industrial site
management, and other. Second part is titled sustainable cultural tourism development in a
digital era, contributing to the plethora of research in the field of virtual tours, gamification
within culture, GIS application in heritage management, focusing on digital world especially
popular within the present pandemic situation. Third part is focusing on social and economic
impacts of cultural tourism, exploring and tackling complex interaction between economic
impacts and social resilience. Fourth and final part is devoted to the sustainable tourism
development in urban areas, focusing on urban destinations that offer a broad and heteroge-
neous range of cultural, architectural, technological, social, and natural experiences and
productsforsustainableculturaltourism.Sheddingalightoninterestingtopicssuchascultural
vitality, socio-economic urban factors, railway heritage, health, and wellness tourism.

Tourism has seen important changes in recent years, especially as a result of the COVID-19
healthcrisis,whichhashittheindustryextremelyhard.Andalthoughtheindustryseemstobe
bouncing back in some countries, its future remains somewhat uncertain. Despite these set-
backs, it is evident that all the stakeholders involved—particularly in cultural tourism—who
have positive expectations for the future must make a strong commitment to the creation of
sustainable tourism models.
While countries’ interest in promoting tourism lies mainly in its contribution to economic
development and potential for creating employment, the social and cultural benefits of the
industry, among them sustainability, cannot be overlooked. In this regard, globalization,
cultural tourism, and sustainability must be viewed as three intersecting elements.
Clearly, tourism and cultural heritage are closely interrelated. On the one hand, visitors
often seek a fulfilling experience in the heart of the destination culture. On the other hand,
culturalheritagehashadastrongimpactonbothnewandtraditionaltourismmodels,ascanbe
seen in the vast and varied research undertaken in recent years.
This book includes a selection of papers presented at the 2nd IEREK International Con-
ference on Cultural Sustainable Tourism. The chapters examine a wide diversity of cultural
tourism sectors, among them industrial heritage, cultural landscape, religious, food,
agro-landscape, cemetery, railway heritage, and health and wellness tourism. The contribu-
tionsalsoaddressculturaltourisminarangeofregionsandcountries,suchastheRepublicof
Turkey,Portugal,Korea,Nigeria,SouthAfrica,Pakistan,China,andRomania,tonamebuta
few.
Moreover, the studies presented in the volume have been carried out using a variety of
methods (descriptive and inferential, qualitative and quantitative, spatial and temporal) and
techniques (structural equation modeling, GIS, Space Syntax, etc.). And the analyses have
been performed not only from the perspective of tourism, but also from a multidisciplinary
approach (sociology,economics, architecture, geography,computer science, visual arts,etc.).
