Preface
When travelers from well­regulated complex societies journey to tribal areas and encounter the indigenous custom of vengeance killing, they are inclined to interpret 
the feuds that they observe as murder running rampant throughout the society. That is, the level of strife strikes them as being anarchic compared to what they are 
accustomed to at home. This was the case with most of the Europeans who traveled to observe and write about the politically autonomous Montenegrin tribesmen 
who, during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, lived near the Adriatic Sea and remained unsubjugated by the mighty Ottoman Turkish Empire that all but 
surrounded them. By contrast, more­careful observers who learn to interpret tribal behavior in the light of indigenous beliefs usually portray feuding more accurately, as 
a customary social activity of great violence but as one that involves, nevertheless, the careful following of culturally prescribed rules.
In writing about the feuding of these nineteenth­century Balkan warriors, I shall carry the analysis farther. I shall emphasize that Montenegrins did not merely act out 
their own cultural tradition by obediently following cultural rules for revenge killing; rather, they understood their own feuding behavior quite well, from certain 
perspectives that were very important to them. They seem to have put such understandings to good use, and by their own standards, at least, they usually were able to 
keep the vicious feuds in their midst reasonably well under control. In my interpretation of their behavior, I shall emphasize that this was not simply a case of having a 
political system automatically find an equilibrium point; rather, the equilibrium that prevailed within and between the tribes was, to a significant degree, the result of 
carefully calculated actions on the parts of the tribesmen and their leaders. Some anthropologists might disagree with this emphasis, but a detailed analysis of feuding in 
Montenegro will demonstrate that nonliterate people at times can be active and astute as social
