TRANSLITERATION
1. Persian
The system used in the journal Iran has been adopted, with the following simplifications:

A standardized system has been formulated by the International Centre for Pashto Studies
in Kabul, but to avoid the use of diacritical marks I have used the same system as for Persian,
with the following simplifications for the additional letters:

3. Turkish
In general I have transliterated from the version written in Arabic script using the same
system as for Persian. In some cases however, I have used the modern romanized Turkish form
when it is more familiar, e.g., Efendi Tepe, Toprakkale.
4. Russian
The system used in the British Museum has been adopted.
In general, diacritical marks have been avoided for the sake of simplicity, with the exception
of the macron (-) over long vowels. Whenever a particular spelling is in more common usage
than its correctly transliterated form, e.g., Begram instead of Bagram, Surkh Kotal instead of
Surkh Kutal, Tepe instead of Tappa, it has been adopted for the sake of convention.
Although I have tried to adhere to these forms as much as possible, many indiscrepancies
and inconsistencies do occur, for which I apologise.
