“Kubo-kun, we need an Aikido club in the Windward area.”
Th is was the beginning of Kailua Aikido Club in 1963. Th is is a story I
have repeated for 50 years. I was just a Shodan when my Sensei Yukiso
Yamamoto made a statement that was a directive not to be questioned.
Th ere were two instructors, no mats, and no students.
Today, Kailua Aikido Club has grown to be a strong organiza-
tion with affi liations throughout the world. We have had our trials and
tribulations as any other organization but we have persevered and we
have survived. In fact, we have fl ourished.
It has been through the support of our members, our instruc-
tors, families and friends that we are able to celebrate this 50th Anniver-
sary of Kailua Aikido Club.
