The innovative volumes in the Heritage, Tourism, and Community se-
ries confront these interconnected issues from multidisciplinary and
interdisciplinary perspectives, addressing heritage and tourism and
their relationships to local community, economic development, re-
gional ecology, heritage conservation and preservation, and related
indigenous, regional, and national political and cultural issues. Of
particular interest are policy parameters and implications for affected
communities; issues of representation; different meanings and un-
derstandings of heritage held by different stakeholders that revolve

the role of various brokers such as tour guides and travel agents. The
volumes in this series are all single-author case studies that convey
the key elements of a specifi c case of heritage tourism development
and highlight the value of the case to those in the heritage fi eld. They
are driven by both theory and practical principles drawn from the
cases that demonstrate the book’s relevance to critical issues in the
fi eld, and they make comparisons to other relevant case studies.

PREFACE

As I was conducting a series of archaeological projects on the south coast
of Peru in the 1980s and ’90s I was frequently visited by tourists, docu-
mentary fi lmmakers, municipal authorities, and local townsfolk, each
of whom expressed curiosity about, opinions concerning, and stakes in
the ancient past of the region. This repeated experience eventually led
me to turn away from archaeological excavation to archaeological eth-
nography, so to speak—to a study of the uses of the past in the present as
conceived and asserted by a range of individuals and groups. This broad
topic encompasses issues that have assumed paramount importance
among a growing group of scholars: archaeologists and anthropologists,
as well as cultural theorists in fi elds as diverse as history, architectural
history, landscape architecture, geography, art history, classics, and ur-
ban planning, to name only the most obvious. All of us share an interest
in the intersections of identity formation, community building, cultural
heritage, nationalism, economic development, tourism, the built envi-
ronment, localism and globalization, and, of course, ancient societies.
Heritage, Tourism, and Community is an innovative new book series
that addresses the interconnected issues of heritage tourism and com-
munity development from multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary per-
spectives. The premise of the series is that archaeological and historic
sites, specifi c buildings, museums of various types, performances, and
natural environments are all venues for the construction and display of
heritage by the tourism industry and by communities (up to the level
of the imagined community of the nation), sometimes in consort with
or opposition to each other. Of particular interest are policy parameters
and policy implications for the affected communities.
Also important to consider are recursive issues of representation:
how “others” are represented to tourists and how tourists are perceived
by the willing or reluctant host community; the different meanings and
understandings of heritage held by different stakeholders that revolve
