Preface
Taurine(2-ethanesulfonicacid)isauniqueandmysteriouscompound.Itispresent
in relatively high concentrations in a wide range of cells and tissues, but exists as
afreeaminoacidinthesecellswithoutbeingutilizedinproteinsynthesis.Taurine
wasfirstisolatedmorethan150yearsagofromox(Taurus)bile,whereitwasfound
inconjugationwithbileacidsthroughanamidelinkage.Sincethattime,ithasbeen
reported to exist in particularly high concentrations in the cytoplasm of excitable
tissues,suchascertainpartsofthebrain,retina,skeletalmuscle,myocardiumand
platelets. Some of its physiological functions have already been established, for
exampleitsroleasanessentialnutrientduringdevelopment,anosmolyteandaneu-
romodulator.Recently,taurinehasbeenadvancedasacytoprotectiveagentagainst
certain pathological perturbations, but the mechanisms underlying its actions are
stillmostlyamatterofspeculation.Moreover,itispossiblethatotherputativefunc-
tionsoftaurineremaintobediscovered.
The16thInternationalTaurineMeeting“TaurineforFutureHealthcare”washeld
onSeptember2–5,2007,inShimoda,Shizuoka,Japan,withthesiteofthemeeting
being the Shimoda Central Hotel. Approximately 80 individuals from 11 nations,
including newcomers as well as experts in taurine research, attended the scientific
meeting.Atotalof79paperswerepresentedaseitheroralorposterpresentations.
This meeting was multidisciplinary, with participants addressing multiple areas of
thebiologicalsciences.Typhoon“Fitow”,whichmeans“beautifulfragrantflower”
inaMicronesianlanguage,hittheShimodaregionwithfullforceattheendofthe
meeting, but we were able to finish the scientific sessions and enjoy an excursion
priortotheonslaught.ThemorningafterFitow’sfury,thelingeringscentofflowers
remindedusthatweareclearlyatthedawnofaneweraintaurineresearch.
TheorganizersofthetaurinemeetingwouldliketothankTaishoPharmaceutical
Co., Ltd., Tokyo, Japan, for their generous financial support and assistance in the
organization of the meeting. We would also like to thank Dong-A Pharmaceutical

Description:Taurine (2-aminoethanesulfonic acid) is an enigmatic compound abounding in animal tissues. It is present at relatively high concentrations in all electrically excitable tissues such as brain, sensory organs, heart, and muscle, and in certain endocrine glands. Some of its physiological functions are
