Originally this volume was to be a book version of the special issue of
Quarterly Review of Film and Video titled "Remapping the Post-Franco
Cinema," which I edited in 1991. But because I increasingly wanted to
add new, more up-to-date essays, I finally decided to abandon that
project entirely and start a new anthology from scratch.
There are several individuals and institutions I want to thank for
helping me with this process of transforming the volume: the Program
for Cultural Cooperation between Spain's Ministry of Culture and
United States' Universities, which supported this project with grants;
the Instituto de la Cinematograffa y las Artes Audiovisuales within the
Ministerio de Cultura (particularly Carmelo Romero), the Filmoteca
Espanola (particularly its director, Jose Marfa Prado Garda, and its head
librarian, Dolores Devesa), and the Academia de las Artes y las Ciencias
Cinematograficas de Espana (particularly its current president, Jose Luis
Borau), who have consistently supported my work and who helped me
obtain the illustrations (unless otherwise specified, the source for the
