Visse per alcuni anni a Milano dove fu un esponente del movimento della Scapigliatura. Nel 1869 tornò a Vicenza per lavorare come avvocato, ma lasciò la carriera legale molto presto per tornare a scrivere libri a tempo pieno. Nelle sue opere si trova una costante conflitto tra senso del dovere e passioni, fede e ragione. In alcuni casi questo conflitto porta l'anima tormentata dei personaggi ad esperienze mistiche. Il suo capolavoro è stato "Piccolo Mondo Antico". Il romanzo, ben scritto, è ambientato nella sua amata Valsolda, sul Lago di Lugano, nel 1850. Vi si trovano deliziose evocazioni del paesaggio e forti caratterizzazioni che rivelano il conflitto psicologico interiore dei personaggi. Fogazzaro era un uomo profondamente religioso, sostenitore della riforma nella Chiesa cattolica, con il proposito di conciliare la teoria dell'evoluzione di Darwin con il cristianesimo. Elaborò nuove interpretazioni del positivismo e delle teorie evoluzioniste, ma a causa di questo nel 1905 la Chiesa Cattolica Romana mise al bando i suoi romanzi "Il santo" e "Leila". Morì nella sua città natale, Vicenza, il 7 marzo 1911. Antonio Fogazzaro was born in Vicenza (March 25th 1842) to a rich family. In 1864 he got a law degree in Turin. In Milan he followed the scapigliatura movement. In 1869 he was back in Vicenza to work as lawyer, but he left this path very soon to write books full time. In his works one finds a constant conflict between sense of duty and passions, faith and reason. In some cases this brings the tormented soul of characters into mystic experiences. His masterpiece was "Piccolo Mondo Antico" (variously titled in English translations as "The Patriot" or as "Little World of the Past"). This well written novel is set in his beloved Valsolda on Lake Lugano, Italy, in the 1850s. It has delightful evocations of the landscape, and strong characterizations which reveal the inner psychological conflicts of the characters. Fogazzaro was a deeply religious man but supported reform in the Catholic Church and toured Italy proposing to reconcile Darwin's theory of evolution with Christianity. He found new interpretations in positivist and evolutionist theories, but because of this in 1905 the Roman Catholic Church banned the novels "Il santo" and "Leila". He died six years later in his birthplace, Vicenza.
