National Hockey Call Up for Angela

After a stellar performance at the School Sport Australia 16
Years and Under Hockey Championship in August, Boyup
Brook’s Angela Chilwell has been named in the Australian
Schoolgirls hockey team to travel to South Africa in June
2016.

The not-yet-16 year old scored two goals in the week long
Championship in which Western Australia finished fourth.

Playing at the Perth Hockey Stadium, Angela said, “It was
awesome to play in front of a home crowd. It made the
game a lot easier feeding off the crowd's encouragement.”

In preparation for the Championship, Angela focused on her
personal fitness, nutrition requirements and skills, along with
training every Sunday morning and Wednesday night and
playing in occasional scratch matches.

Currently a Year 10 boarder at St Hilda’s Anglican School
for Girls, balancing her school work, Club hockey, State
hockey and other commitments (including a school rowing

team) was a challenge. She said, “I made sure whenever I

had spare time I would get work done to keep on top.” This

meant late nights, early mornings and even turning down
social outings with her boarding mates to be at her best for trials and scratch matches - a real tribute to her dedication.

But it was all worth it with Angela saying “It was one of the most enjoyable hockey tournaments, I loved every second of it.”

Angela joins two of her Western Australian teammates, Isabella Suleski and Renee Rockliffe in the eighteen girl national team.
When her name was announced, the teenager squealed with her teammates and found herself holding back tears of happiness.

Mum, Ros Chilwell was also quite emotional as she witnessed the announcement, but overwhelmed with absolute pride and
excitement, especially as WA had not done as well in the event as they would have liked. Ros commented, “It was also a great
sense of pride to our community, as a lot of Angela's attributes have evolved from wonderful role models coming through the Boyup
Junior and Women's teams, and she will always be very proud of that.”

A meeting was held during the event for parents to outline pathways for the athletes and it was stressed how important it is to keep a
balance of activities in their lives, to which Ros said, “It looks like she won’t be giving up her spot on the tailing cradle anytime soon!”

As the 2015 recipient of the Shire of Boyup Brook’s Young Achiever of the Year, Angela continues to demonstrate the qualities which
earned her this title and with her whole-hearted commitment and work ethic, she is destined to achieve great results.

Seeking Stories of Former Students

Do you know a former student of the Boyup Brook District High School who has achieved great things?

As part of a small grant obtained by the BBDHS P&C, some of the more notable, interesting, colourful, awarded
and fabulous members of the school alumni are to be honoured.

A Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal grant has allowed us to fund an ‘avenue of honour’ project, to tie in with the school’s
‘Masterplan’ improvement blueprint. As suggested in the plan, an avenue of trees has recently been planted along the driveway into
the Middle School campus, off Beatty Street. Each tree will be accompanied by a small plaque to celebrate the life of a former
student of the school.

So, with the trees now in, we need to identify some worthy ex-students, whose achievements in life can be documented and listed on
the ‘alumni honour plaques’.

The project aims to help us celebrate the long, proud history of education in Boyup Brook.

From the school’s inception in 1900, thousands of students have completed some, or all, of their education there.

If you know of any alumni, from any one of the decades of the BBDHS history, who has achieved something fabulous, please let us
know. Whether it be an achievement of international significance, one of great local value, an act of immeasurable valour or
kindness, or an achievement made despite great adversity, we’d love to know about it.

The name, estimated date of attendance at the school and a brief description of the person’s life is all we require.

Please make your suggestions by or before September 30.

The BBDHS alumni community is now spread far and wide, with many great stories evolving from their achievements. Please help

Council is pleased to announce these reductions and it is hoped that more people will participate and use our Swimming Pool.

I was fortunate to attend the WALGA Convention week with Cr Kaltenrieder, Cr Aird and Cr O’Hare. It was great to liaise with like minded
people from other Councils, especially country residents who have very similar issues of population decline, medical services and quality of
life generally. Justin Langer was the guest speaker at the breakfast and entertained us all with lessons on life and raising 4 daughters.

Finally it is good to see more rain around lately, some crops are looking very good but if we don’t get more, there could be water problems
next summer.

The Sandakan Memorial Service will be held on the 8th September 2015 along with the Sandakan scholarship being presented.

The rise in the wool market has flowed through to local wool stores, with the Landmark
Dalgety South West Wool Store having outgrown its original premises to recently relocate
to a new, larger site at Unit 1 /13 Rose Street in Bridgetown.

Manager of the Wool Store, Matthew Chambers was born and raised in Boyup Brook and
has been with Landmark for four years. He said, “The business was established three
years ago and has grown quickly to now do over 800 bales a year.”

The wool store offers private wool buying with on farm pick up and a 48 hour EFT
payment, as well as wool brokering including forward selling. Matthew offers a reliable,
trustworthy and prompt service for all sizes of wool growers. “Whether it’s the five pet
sheep, the mob of fifty from the hobby block, the ten butts of bits and pieces clogging up
your shed, the time has never been better to turn it into money with a strong wool
market,” he said.

“Our forward selling options are simple, fair and transparent with growers being able to
lock in a price up to three years in advance.”

The Boyup community is one that Matthew is very proud to be a part of. He said, “Being
the fourth generation of Chambers in the area and now raising three of my own children, I
don’t think there is a better place to live.”

Matthew is the Vice Chairman for the Rylington Park Management Committee, a steward
for the wool section at the Dinninup show and also a committee member on the RAS wool
section and Young judges section. He is also the Over-judge for the Junior wool judging
at the Wagin Woolarama, the Perth Royal and Dinninup Shows.
