For my professional colleagues: In this book, we consider a va-
riety of fetishes, partialisms, and paraphilias and discuss them as
needed. However, I have generally chosen not to use these clinical
terms to avoid an unnecessarily complex range of clinical defini-
tions and terminology. Instead, I use the catchall term “kink” to
include all atypical sexual behaviors and interests. In chapter 12, I
do briefly discuss paraphilias, but, generally, I use “kink” where I
would use fetish, partialism, paraphilia, and so forth in a more
clinicalbook.

This work is dedicated to all the straight men
who have taught me about the fluidity of male sexuality.
You were honest and brave.
You faced skepticism and scorn.
I can do no more than be inspired by your example.
