LICENSE
This Driver's License Manual is designed to prepare you for your
examination when applying for a Class D operator's license, motor-
cycle license or Learner's Permit. Applicants for Class A, B, C or
School Bus operator's certificate must learn this manual as well as
the Commercial DriversLicense Manual in order to obtain a Class
A, B or C license.

DEFINITIONS
AUTOMOBILE: Any niotorvehicle except a motorcycle.
TRUCK:.Amotorvehicle registered acommercial vehicle having
a'registered gross wefght in excess oftwenty-six thousand1pounds.
TRUCK TRAILER COMBINATION: A truck having a registered
gross,weigfit in excess pf twenty-six thousand pounds drawing a
trailer having a registered gross weight in.excess of ten thousand

TRACTOR: Amotorvehicle,designed and used fordrawing a-semi-
trailer., .... / . • / • • : '•. '
SEMI-TRAILER: Atrailerdesigned and used in combination with a
tractorsuchthat somepartoftheweightofsuchtrailerandthatofits
loadrests upon and is carried by the tractor.
BUS: Amotorvehicledesignedorusedforthetransportationofper-
sons and having permanent' seating accommodations for fifteen or
morepersons in additiontothe operator.
SCHOOL BUS: Anymotorvehicle being usedto:
1. Transport school pupils to afrom school: or
2. Transport children enrolled in a camp or recreational program
exceptthe following: -
a. anyvehiclethatisusedincasesofemergencynotmorethan
five days;
b. any vehicle that is used while also picking up passengers
under a certificate from the Department ofPublic Utilities;
c. amotorvehiclecarryingnomore than 8 persons in addition
to the driver.
SCHOOL PUPIL: Any person enrolled in any school, kindergarten
through grade twelve, or enrolled in any program for day care ser-
vices, orinanyprogram forchildren with specialneeds as definedin
Chapter 7IB, Section 1 or in any organized day or Summer camp
program or any activity supported by said schools.
MOTORCYCLE: Amotorcycle is:
1. Any motor vehicle that has a driver's seat or saddle and has no
more than three wheels in contact with the ground.
2. Any bicycle with a motor or driving wheel attached except the
following:
a. Golfcarts;
b. Industrial three wheeled trucks;
C. Amotorvehicleonwhichthedriverandpassengerareinan
enclosed cab;
d. Motorizedbicycles (moped).
MOPEDS (MOTORIZED BICYCLES): According to Massa
chusettslaw, aMopedfallsunderthedefinitionofa"motorizedbicy-
cle," and in orderto be classified as a "Moped" it must comply with
the following:
1. Apedal bicycle which has a helper motor, or a non-pedal bicy-
cle which has amotor;
2. Acylindercapacity ofno more than fifty cubic centimeters;
3. An automatic transmission;
4. Avehiclewhichiscapableofamaximum speedofnomorethan
30 m.p.h.;
5. Complies with all applicable Federal motor vehicle safety
standards.
A Moped is not eligible for a Moped sticker if it does not meet the
above requirements (see Page 28, MOPEDS).

"Motorcycle,"anymotorvehiclehavinga
seatorsaddlefortheuseoftheriderand
designedtotravelonnotmorethanthree
wheelsincontactwiththeground,including
anybicyclewithamotorordrivingwheel
attached.
The vehicle in which you will take the road test must meet the
writtendescriptionforthatclass. Ifyou wishto be licensedto drive a
vehiclewithairbrakes,thevehicleinwhichyouwillbetestedmustbe
equippedwith airbrakes. The above vehicle silhouettes typify, butdo
notfullycover,thetypesofvehiclesfallingwithineachclass.Tooper-
ate aschoolbus, drivers arerequiredto obtain a specific certification,
in additionto the appropriate class andendorsementofCDLlicense.
This Drivers'License Manual is designed to prepare you for
yourexamination when applyingfora Class D operator's license,
motorcycle license orLearner's Permit.

HOW TO OBTAIN A LEARNER'S PERMIT
Learner's Permit Application Requirements
Anyperson who is atleast 16 years ofage, exceptpersons who
have hadtheirlicense taken awayby the Registrarorpersons whose
rightto operate has beentaken away by theRegistrar, may apply for
a Learner's Permit at any Registry Office. (See inside backpage for
location.)
Upon completion ofthe Learner's Permit application, you must
submit it in person to the Registry of Motor Vehicles office. When
your application has been approved and the required fee of $15.00
paid,youwillbegiventhetimeofyourexaminationforthe sameday.
Examinations are offered on a walk-in basis. No appointment for a
futuredatewillbescheduled. ExaminationsarenotheldonSaturdays.
1. Your application must be given tothe Examiner atthe
time of your examination.
2. Identifying Documents-Atthetimeofexamination,allappli-
cantsmustshowproofofagebypresentingabirthcertificate,bap-
tismalrecord,schoolcertification,passport,orotherapprovedoffi-
cial document certifying date ofbirth ofapplicant. Except for an
applicant who is under 18 years of age and has an appropriate
sponsor, must also show proofofage at the time ofexamination,
each applicant must present at least three documents sufficient to
confirm the applicant's date of birth, Massachusetts resi-
dence, and evidence ofthe applicant's signature.

ACCEPTED.
3. Driver License Number- DriverLicense numbers are public
records. A random state-assigned license number will be issued
unless you request otherwise. You must, however, submit your
socialsecuritynumber,whichmustberetainedonRegistryrecords
for interstate driver license identification purposes. Your social
security number may be verified by the Social Security
Administration.
