Movement’
This book explores the interface between diverse social movement resistances
to neoliberal globalisation and a range of critical theories in the discipline of
International Relations (IR).
From the Zapatistas to Seattle and beyond, the so-called ‘anti-globalisation
movement’ or ‘global backlash’ has been grabbing headlines and capturing
political imaginations worldwide. If indeed these diverse resistances consti-
tute a movement, then it is one that seeks to challenge globalised power
relations, create transnational solidarities, and generate distinctive claims to
knowledge about the world, in ways that could challenge the fundaments of
the IR discipline. As such, ‘the anti-globalisation movement’ should be of
central concern to critical theories in IR, which have long focused on the
ways in which knowledge is shaped by power and can promote resistance. Yet
critical theorising on this topic has thus far been limited.
This ground-breaking collection significantly advances our knowledge of the
relationship between critical theorising and ‘anti-globalisation’ struggles.
Catherine Eschle and Bice Maiguashca have brought together contributions
that offer diverse empirical accounts of ‘the anti-globalisation movement’and
that also reflect on the existence, character and significance of that movement
from a range of critical-theoretical perspectives, specifically Marxist,
Gramscian, feminist, post-structuralist, post-colonial and post-anarchist.
They map out the convergences and divergences between these approaches
and point to further areas of research and possible collaboration. The book is
thus a powerful contribution to what the editors hope will be an ongoing
dialogue between "the movement" and IR, between theory and practice, and
between different critical theory perspectives.

Bice Maiguashca is a Lecturer in the Department of Politics at the University
of Exeter.

Contributors
Vicki Birchfield is Assistant Professor in The Sam Nunn School of
International Affairs at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Director
of the Brussels Summer Program. Her research and teaching interests
include comparative politics, international political economy and
European integration. She has published in the European Journal of
Political Research and the Review of International Political Economy and
is currently completing a book manuscript entitled ‘Institutions, Values
and Income Inequality in Capitalist Democracies’, which presents a
comparative analysis of the institutional and cultural roots of income
inequality in sixteen countries.
Roland Bleiker is Reader in Peace Studies and Political Theory at the
University of Queensland in Australia. He is the author of Popular
Dissent, Human Agency and Global Politics (Cambridge University Press,
2000); Rethinking Korean Security: Towards a Culture of Reconciliation
(University of Minnesota Press, forthcoming 2004); and essays on polit-
ical theory, social movements, aesthetics, international relations and
Asian politics. He is currently pursuing a research project that engages
key dilemmas in global security through a range of neglected aesthetic
sources, such as literature, visual art, architecture and music.
Irasema Coronado is Assistant Professor of Political Science and academic
advisor of the Center for Inter-American and Border Studies at the
University of Texas at El Paso. She is the co-author of Fronteras No Mas:
Toward Social Justice at the U.S.-Mexico Border (Palgrave, 2002) and co-
editor of Policy and Politics on the Texas Border (Kendall-Hunt, 2003).
She received a Border Fulbright scholarship for the academic year
2004–5, during which time she was teaching border politics at the
Universidad Autonoma de Ciudad Juárez. Her research interests include
environmental and gender issues on the border.
Catherine Eschle is a Lecturer in the Department of Government,
University of Strathclyde. Her teaching and research interests lie at the
intersection of feminist theory, IR theory, (anti-)globalisation and
