This Bulletin records the activities, achievements, sourcesofsupport, and
1990-91 financial statements of the most vital museum devoted to Amer-
ican art and artists. However, itcannotconvey the spirit ofoptimism and
the renewed energyand purpose thathave infused theWhitney Museum
ofAmerican Art since the arrival this past Februaryofourbrilliantnewdi-
rector, DavidA. Ross. DavidisthesixthdirectorintheMuseum'ssixty-year
history, succeedingThomas N. Armstrong III, who is now directoremeri-
tus. We are extremely fortunate that the Museum will continue tobenefit
fromtheextraordinaryabilitiesofJenniferRussell, associatedirector, who
servedas acting directorbetweenTomand David. We arealsoindebtedto
the members of the Search Committee, which was superbly chaired by
Jules D. Prown, for their exceptionally diligent efforts and profound wis-
dom in conducting the search that resulted in David's appointment.
I am delighted to report that four outstanding members were elected
to the Board during 1990-91:
Fiona Donovan, FloraBiddle'sdaughterandGertrudeVanderbiltWhit-
ney's great-granddaughter, is an art historian and former curator at the
UniversityArt Museum, University ofMinnesota.
Arthur Fleischer, Jr.,isPartnerandChairmanofFried, Frank, Harris,
Shriver &Jacobson. Arthuris an authority in the field ofsecurities regula-
tion and is coauthoroftwo books and numerous articles on the subject.
Robert SosnickisPresidentoftheReal Estate Developmentand Invest-
ment Company (REDICO) in Southfield, Michigan, and Chairman of
Arena Associates, Inc., inTroy, Michigan.
In recognition of the important support that the National Committee has
provided since it was established in 1980, its chairman, S. Roger Hor-
chow, wasmadeanexofficiomemberoftheBoard inJune. Rogerrecently
retiredasChairmanofTheHorchowCollection, theprestigiousmail-order
business he and his wife, Carolyn, created.
We will miss fourTrustees who retired from the Board this year, and
to whom we are deeply grateful for the crucial contributions they have
madetotheMuseum: BrendanGill, whoestablishedanewbaseofsupport
for the Library through the highly regarded publishing program of the
Library Fellows, which he will continue to chair; Benjamin D. Holloway,
who was instrumental in establishing the Whitney Museum ofAmerican
Artat Equitable Center, one ofthe mostinnovative partnershipsbetween
a museum and a corporate sponsor; Elizabeth M. Petrie, who chaired the
Building Committee from 1981 to 1990, and who continues to serve onits
successor, the Facilities Committee; and GeorgeWeissman, who initiated
and enthusiastically led the effort to establish the Whitney Museum of
American Art at Philip Morris and secured major funding from Philip
Morris fora number oflandmark exhibitions at the Museum.
MuchisnewabouttheWhitneythisyear. Inadditiontoanewdirector
and new Trustees, there are new committees, new committee chairmen
and members, and new staff members. I extend my deepest appreciation
to all who have served the Whitney Museum so very well, both old and
new. I hope you will take the time to look through this Bulletin to learn
about the changes that have occurred, as well as about the depth and
variety ofthe Museum's programs and activities.
During my firstyear as President, I have come to know the members
of the Board ofTrustees and staff very well. I thank them, along with all
thefoundations, corporations, governmentagencies, andindividualswho
have made our programs possible. The extraordinary dedication and
generosityshownbysomany, particularlybytheTrustees, whogavemore
to the Annual Fund in 1990-91 than ever before in the Museum's history,
is overwhelming. It is far more than I ever expected or hoped when I
assumed theofficeofPresidentandisa mostauspiciousbeginningforthe
Whitney Museum's next sixty years.
