THE ANNALS INDEX
VOLUME 19
or Margaret Byrne Swain
@| ," University of California, Davis, USA
Annals Volume 19 began with a Special Issue on Pilgrimage and Tour-
ism, exploring “The Quest in Guest” and adding to theoretical and
regional perspectives in articles, research reports, and reviews of other
works on pilgrimage. Subsequent 1992 issues address a wide range
of research topics and methodological questions. Several new subject
headings, including “Fourth World,” Music, and “Postmodernism” are
introduced below.
Indexing by hand is an arcane art, vulnerable to many human
quirks. For example, all keywords from an article’s abstract may not
be indexed. This generally occurs when the keywords in question are
already expressed by other index phrases that are chosen for the sake
of index economy. Furthermore, an article is indexed on content, not
just the keywords. Frequently the geographic location of research, for
example, is indexed even if this has not been a keyword. The Index
Editor welcomes comments and suggestions for improvement.
